Most of the birds in Rwanda are endemic to the albertine rift valley, making it a unique birding destination area where you can view birds not found elsewhere in Africa. There are many birding areas, but Akagera national Park has the largest concentration of birds in the country and is the easiest area where a variety of birds, such as the rear shoebill can be viewed. Other areas include Bigesera, Lake Bulera, Gisenyi, Nyungwe Forest National Park, Volvanoes National Park among others.
Some of the rare birds in the wetland areas include, the papyrus Gonolek, Carruthre’s Cisticola, Blue headed Coucal, white winged warbler. Species within the acacia filled park include red-faced barbet, black and familiar chats, Tabora Cisticola, woodpecker, white winged and Broad-tailed warbler, miombo wren-warbler.
When you visit Akagera National Park, you will have a boat cruise on Lake ihema and Lake Bihengero, where you will view many bird species. You are also rewarded with view of other mammals such as Hippos, crocodiles, buffalos along the shores and many others.
In Nyungwe Forest National Park, you are rewarded with view of many bird species, and a canopy walk offers an eye- level contact with the birds. Tour in the forest will also reward you with view of many bird species as well as a variety of primates, such as Chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, baboons, vervet monkeys, and many more.
Volcanoes National park is famous for being a home to mountain gorillas, where tourists go for Gorilla Tracking adventure. There is also golden monkeys in the park, and tourists hike the volcanoes in search of the primates. Besides the primates, the park has over 150 bird species some of which are endemic to albertaine rift and montane forest. Some of the bird species that are spotted include, the handsome francolin, Rwenzori Turacco, Archer’s robin-chat, dusky and shelley’s crimsonwings.
